By Matt Giordano, Owner of CrossFit Newtown When people ask what makes CrossFit Newtown special, they often expect me to talk about our programming, our facility, or our coaching credentials. While I’m certainly proud of all those elements, the truth is simpler and more profound: it’s our community that truly sets us apart. In my 25 years in the fitness industry and my experience as an athlete, coach, and gym owner, I’ve come to understand that lasting transformation rarely happens in isolation. The most powerful change occurs within supportive communities where people feel both challenged and valued. This understanding has shaped how we’ve built CrossFit Newtown from day one—not just as a place to work out, but as a genuine community hub that extends its impact far beyond our four walls. The Heart of CrossFit Newtown Walk into any class at CrossFit Newtown, and you’ll immediately notice something different from...

By Matt Giordano, Owner of CrossFit Newtown From Pull-ups to Clean and Jerks to Deadlifts and Wall Balls, CrossFitters perform a variety of movements. At times I find it difficult to improve on everything and I know that many of you feel the same way. To compound that difficulty, we have many “experts” telling us many different things will work, which can confuse and frustrate. For simplicity, I wish we had one movement that would make us better at all the other movements. Fortunately, we do; The Back Squat. I consider the back squat the king of all movements because it engages all of the muscles in your body. Greg Glassman, CEO and Founder of CrossFit Inc, once said in an interview, “Regardless of the problem, just squat.” I remember working out in high school and college thinking that the gym had a lot  guys and gals in some serious...

By Matt Giordano, Owner of CrossFit Newtown In my 25 years in the fitness industry, I’ve seen trends come and go. Some leave quietly, while others transform the landscape permanently. CrossFit belongs firmly in the latter category. Since its emergence, CrossFit has revolutionized how we approach fitness, challenging conventional wisdom and creating one of the most effective training methodologies available today. Yet despite its proven track record, CrossFit remains surrounded by persistent myths and misconceptions. At CrossFit Newtown, our coaching team—each bringing unique credentials and perspectives—consistently addresses these misunderstandings with both new members and curious observers. Today, I want to share what our coaches want you to know about the most common CrossFit myths we encounter. Myth #1: “CrossFit Is Only for Elite Athletes” Perhaps the most pervasive myth we hear is that CrossFit is exclusively for those already in peak physical condition. Our Director of Coaching and Client Success,...

By Matt Giordano, Owner of CrossFit Newtown As both a father of three young athletes and a former collegiate soccer player, I’ve spent countless hours on fields and in gyms watching youth sports evolve over the decades. What I’ve observed is concerning: while specialization has increased, fundamental athletic development has declined. Today’s young athletes often excel in sport-specific skills but lack the foundational movement patterns, strength, and physical literacy that create truly exceptional, injury-resistant performers. This observation was the catalyst for creating the Newtown Youth Academy at CrossFit Newtown. Beyond Early Specialization The current youth sports landscape often pushes kids to specialize in a single sport at increasingly younger ages. As someone who has been in the fitness industry for 25 years and holds a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science, I can tell you that this approach is fundamentally flawed. Early specialization doesn’t create better athletes—it creates imbalanced ones. It...

By Janice Perry, Head Nutrition Coach at CrossFit Newtown When people ask me what makes CrossFit Newtown special, I often point to our holistic approach to fitness. We understand that what happens in the gym is just one piece of the puzzle. What you do in your kitchen matters just as much—if not more—than what you do on the workout floor. That’s where our Trifecta Nutrition Coaching program comes in. My Journey to Nutrition Coaching Like many of you, my path wasn’t straightforward. I’ve always been an athlete at heart—from gymnastics to soccer to softball. If it involved competition, I was all in. Pitching for LaSalle University was a highlight of my early athletic career, but life has a way of evolving our priorities. When I became a mother of four, I faced the reality that many of you know all too well: balancing fitness with family responsibilities isn’t easy....
