June Athlete Spotlight: John Hartmann

2019CFNOPEN19PT2-1-(ZF-9491-55265-1-003)

Tell us something about your life outside of CrossFit (career, family, hobbies, etc).

I have been married for 31 years to Vicki ( 9:30 am Crossfit, sometimes ), have 3 children and one grandson. My oldest son, Colin, has his own Crossfit box, Crossfit Revenge  in Southampton. I have run my own business for the last 32 years and am currently doing my best to gradually step away from the day-to-day running of the business.

My favorite book or movie: Pulp Fiction

My favorite local restaurant: There are a few. Mediterra in Princeton, Marsilios Kitchen in West Trenton and Zoubi in New Hope. I cried many tears when The Saloon in Newtown closed its doors a few years ago and the $11.00 Bucket O’ Booze was gone.

My favorite band/music genre: Alt Rock and country. Go figure..

Tell us something that we don’t know or would be surprised to learn about you:

I am a grandfather. I had a total shoulder replacement 2 years ago. I am also into martial arts. I trained in Krav Maga and am now doing Kali, Wing Chun and Espada y Daga

How I was introduced to CrossFit:

I was seeing Dr. Tom for my back and he encouraged me to try Crossfit. I tried it and loved it.That was 10 years ago. Hard to believe it took that long to get the Athlete of the Month call. LOL

My fitness routine before CrossFit:

I have always been very active. When I started Crossfit I was playing hockey, downhill skiing, mountain biking and involved in martial arts/fighting systems with some fitness/weight training on the side

My thoughts after my first CrossFit workout:

It’s been so long I can’t remember. Probably the same thoughts as after Murph…Holy S–t,  that was Truly Awful !!

My proudest CrossFit accomplishment is:

Getting the first Snatch after my shoulder replacement

My favorite WOD is:  Cindy

My Favorite Lift is:  Deadlift

My next goal is:  Get back HSPU

How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

My fitness level is up, my weight is down and no matter what kind of day I’ve had, after the WOD is done my head is clear and I am ready for the next challenge.

What I love most about CrossFit Newtown:

Carrie and Michelle’s 40 minute warm-ups!! Seriously, it is the low-key, friendly atmosphere and the excellent coaching. Kate’s Thursday Night Cocktail Hour is also a plus.

What advice I would give to someone just joining CrossFit Newtown:

Don’t worry about your score or what the other athletes are doing. When the WOD is running and everybody is getting to that dark place, nobody is watching you.

Do you have any diet/nutritional advice?

Eat real food and record what/how much you eat. Any system that forces you to record calories and nutritional content will be an eye-opener. Matt got me started on the My Fitness Pal app which has worked well for me. That being said, there is nothing wrong with the vodka martini/red wine diet, just know when it’s time to throttle back.
