May Athlete Spotlight: Janine Gugger

Tell us something about your life outside of CrossFit (career, family, hobbies, etc).

I am a teacher at a local High School.   I teach Biology & Anatomy/ Physiology. I have a wonderful husband, Gene, whom everybody knows.   We have 2 awesome sons whom you all have seen at the gym lounging on the chairs or floor with their Ipods and annoying music from their games being heard by all or staring me down in the middle of a workout because they need my phone because theirs ran out of juice.  As for hobbies, we like to go camping and my family has a shore house and in the summer we like to go there.

My favorite book or movie:

I loved anything by Dan Brown and mushy stuff like Nicholas Sparks.  As for movies- 13 hours: the secret soldiers of Bengazi, Gladiator, Zoolander, Step brothers, anything with Will Ferrell I love.

 

My favorite local restaurant:

As a family, we usually hit the Ale House.   Easy, loud, family friendly, has crayons, TV’s with sports on and good food that our boys love.  If Gene and I get a date night somewhere, we both love the burgers at the Vault.

 

Tell us something that we don’t know or would be surprised to learn about you:

I love nature and I would always prefer to be outside opposed to inside.

 

How I was introduced to CrossFit:  

My husband, he wanted me to try it. He thought I would love it and I did.  So, he was right, and that was hard to admit. :)

 

My fitness routine before CrossFit:  

I am a morning person for the most part and that is the only time I can work out with my sons and their crazy schedules.  So, I usually would wake up around 4am and go to planet fitness and do cardio/treadmill/elliptical and some weight machines.   Currently, due to my schedule many times I still have to wake up that early but now I go for a run outside with my 80-pound golden retriever, Bear.  Unless, we make a 4:30 am class, any takers? ;) HA!

 

My thoughts after my first CrossFit workout:  

Good Lord that was hard… and I am so out of shape.

 

My proudest CrossFit accomplishment is:  

Anytime I PR a lift

 

My favorite WOD is:  :  Kelly, Karen, and  Fight gone bad

My Favorite Lift is:  Anything Squat-Front, back or overhead

 

My next goal is:  I have so many-Double unders, pull ups the list just goes on…

 

How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

I think it has given be more confidence, motivation and energy.

What I love most about CrossFit Newtown:  The supportive people & coaches and how we are all in it together regardless of how awful the WOD is

What advice I would give to someone just joining CrossFit Newtown:  

Just try it and be your own competition.   Don’t stress about what everybody else can do. Just compete with yourself and try to do a little bit better every time.

Do you have any diet/nutritional advice?

Um, not really…Stay away from processed food and eat real food.  I have been doing intermittent fasting and ketogenic diet. I think everybody is different but I really like these 2 together for me.  I never really knew about insulin resistance and every single thing you eat spikes your insulin. I have been trying to be mindful of that.    In terms of intermittent fasting you get the benefits of Autophagy (buzz science word) so that’s a plus.
