August Athlete Spotlight: Chris Garman

Tell us something about your life outside of CrossFit (career, family, hobbies, etc).

You all know my lovely wife Kim who kicks my butt in every workout. We have three crazy cats and currently live in Northeast Philly. I work as a medical lab technician that is located next to the animal hospital CARES in Langhorne. I moved to this area about 7 years ago from Latrobe, a small town outside of Pittsburgh. My parents and two younger sisters still live in the Pittsburgh area.

My favorite book or movie:

Favorite books would be A Song of Fire and Ice series.

Favorite movie is tough but I will say my favorite movie series are Lord of the Rings and Star Wars … nerd alert

My favorite local restaurant:

Indian Garden in Yardley

Tell us something that we don’t know or would be surprised to learn about you:

I was born in South Korea and lived there for the first year of my life.

How I was introduced to CrossFit:

I was introduced by Kim. She would come home everyday telling me about the WOD she just did and I would sit there pretending to know what she was talking about. I decided to come cheer her on when she did the Holiday Hopper and all I remember thinking was that this looks awesome and I want to be able to do that.

My fitness routine before CrossFit:

I did a lot of the at home workouts like P90X and Insanity. I was never very motivated to work out or stick to a schedule when I did these workouts though.

My thoughts after my first CrossFit workout:

Here was my thought process for the workout.

Before: Don’t make a fool of yourself you can do this

During: I have made a horrible mistake, I might die

After: Everything is on fire, what just happened

5 Mins after: Cannot wait to come back tomorrow and do it again

My proudest CrossFit accomplishment is:

I have a couple accomplishments that stick out like recently getting my first muscle up, but my proudest moment would be competing in the Holiday Hopper. Even though I am pretty sure I finished last, that competition was the reason I wanted to join in the first place and being able to do the movements and be a part of that was so awesome.

My favorite WOD is:

It would be between Annie or Grace

My Favorite Lift is:

Cleans or Deadlift

My next goal is:

I would love to be able to RX all the workouts for the next Open

How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

Crossfit has given me a lot more confidence, has made me a lot stronger, and I just feel a lot healthier overall.

What I love most about CrossFit Newtown:

It would have to be the people and coaches at CFN. I always feel welcomed and there is always someone there to cheer you on or congratulate you on your accomplishments.

What advice I would give to someone just joining CrossFit Newtown:

Do not be afraid to fail or finish last in a workout. I was not able to finish my first workout
and I can not even begin to count how many times people are waiting for me to finish a timed workout, but if you keep coming back and working hard you will definitely see results.

Do you have any diet/nutritional advice?

I unfortunately am not the person to ask for diet advice. It is something that I will definitely have to work on. I just have this problem that I love all the bad foods way too much.
