July Athlete Spotlight: Toni Perilli

Tell us something about your life outside of CrossFit (career, family, hobbies, etc).

My husband Matt, 3.5 year old daughter Sloane (aka Chooch), and I live in Newtown.  I grew up in Hamilton, NJ, where my most of family lives, including my mom and two younger brothers.  I was in Medical Device/Surgical Device OR Sales for about 8 years out of college.  Last year, I decided to go out on my own and I am doing consulting work for a group of plastic surgeons in the Metro D.C. area that are expanding their practice; so I work there a few days a week.

We spend our free time as a family in Ship Bottom, LBI on our boat and at the beach. My aunt and uncle own an arcade/ice cream shop there where I worked as a kid scooping ice cream.  I had one really good bicep then.  I enjoy crafting, painting, baking, music, wine, and traveling.  I try to keep plants alive but it never works out.

My favorite book or movie:

The Alchemist by Pablo Coelho, The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

Love Actually, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Heavy Weights, Sandlot, Better Off Dead, Steel Magnolias, What Dreams May Come, Wedding Crashers, A League of Their Own, Pretty Woman.

My favorite local restaurant:

Toscano’s in Bordentown (OMG!) and Delorenzo’s in Robbinsville (There is NO other Delo’s in my opinion).

Tell us something that we don’t know or would be surprised to learn about you:

There’s an article about me in a College Sales Management textbook from 2010.  I lived in 5 states in 4 years after college.  I was a runner up Miss Saint Patrick’s Day in 2004 (kind of funny for a Toni Fiorello) and senior prom queen.  Also, I am a pretty excellent dancer and make fantastic banana bread.

How I was introduced to CrossFit:

One of my good friends started doing it and thought I would love it too.  I did.

My fitness routine before CrossFit:

Matt and I did personal training and boot camp for about a year to get ready for our wedding.  I started working out sophomore year of college at the school gym.  After that, group fitness classes and spinning.  Basically just hours of cardio and light weights so that I, “wouldn’t get big.”

My thoughts after my first CrossFit workout:

“Wow, I am TERRIBLE.  That was HORRIBLE.  What time is class tomorrow night?”

My proudest CrossFit accomplishment is:

When I finally got Handstand Push-ups and Pull-ups.  They took me a long time, way longer than double unders did.  I used to get disgusted with myself and almost want to give up; but I kept trying.  There is always going to be something to improve in Crossfit.

My favorite WOD is:

I like Filthy 50, Fight Gone Bad, or any chipper that calls for major endurance.

My Favorite Lift is:

Push Jerk or Overhead Squat

My next goal is:

Becoming more efficient at pull-ups and to eventually get muscle ups. To be a savage deadlifter.

How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?

Wait… there’s life outside of the gym?  JK, I’m definitely a much badder b*%$# than I would be without it.  Stronger, braver, kinder, and more confident.  I feel like the kind of mom Sloane will hopefully be proud of someday.

What I love most about CrossFit Newtown:

I love that no matter how stressful or tough a day can be; you walk in and do the work and nothing else matters.  You always leave better off than you arrived.  There is a room full of people that know exactly when you need some encouragement.  When I first came back from giving birth, I would cry to Matt that I will never be as strong as I was before and I was right; I’m stronger now.  I owe a lot of that to the 9:30 am and 4:30 pm crews and coaches, Matt, and my BFF Nicole obviously.

What advice I would give to someone just joining CrossFit Newtown:

Check your ego at the door.  Give it your all and don’t cherry pick the WOD’s.  If you come in and do the work, you will see results.

Do you have any diet/nutritional advice?

80/20 seems to work best for me. I need a few adult beverages on the weekends.   I’m currently doing my second cut on the RP Diet this year which is awesome for cutting body fat without losing muscle.  I dream about egg and cheese sandwiches on toasted egg everything bagels though, and Pizza. Mmm.. Pizza.<3
