Tell us something about your life outside of CrossFit (career, family, hobbies, etc).
I have been married for 20 years to my beautiful wife Michele. We have a daughter Morgan who just turned 16 and started driving, a son Jason who finished his first year at Liberty University, and a son Michael who got married last year. My father, brother, and myself own Al’s Auto in Trevose. An automotive recycling facility, repair shop and body shop that employs about 130 people. That is what keeps me busy.
My favorite book or movie:
No doubt about it – Shawshank Redemption.
My favorite local restaurant:
On the Border in Bensalem. I realize there are better Mexican restaurants but…whatever.
Tell us something that we don’t know or would be surprised to learn about you:
I enjoy reality TV. Survivor, Amazing Race, etc.
How I was introduced to CrossFit:
I accidently found the old Crossfit Langhorne one day, tried a class and was immediately hooked. Then, when I having some shoulder issues, Pat McDonald told me about a chiropractor who owned a Crossfit gym. Went to Dr. Tom for a few months, when it was time for a new gym it was an easy decision.
My fitness routine before CrossFit:
Lots of running. 5k’s, Broad Street, Half marathon, P90x and the boring LA Fitness routine
My thoughts after my first CrossFit workout:
“Did someone get the license plate of the truck that just hit me?”
My proudest CrossFit accomplishment is:
I don’t have that “one” accomplishment, but I have the notebook from when I started and it blows my mind how far I have come. I consider myself an average Crossfitter but compared to other 47 year olds, I think I’m doing pretty good.
My favorite WOD is:
Open work out 14.3 – Deadlifts and box jumps. Deadlifts get heavier and more reps as you go. It’s only 8 minutes long, it’s fast and gets heavy.
My Favorite Lift is:
Deadlift. Grab the bar, keep your back straight and pull!!
My next goal is:
Double unders. I have been doing Crossfit for 4 years. It’s ridiculous that I don’t have double unders. Please hold me accountable and make me practice!!
How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?
Tremendously. More energy, confidence, and a better attitude.
What I love most about CrossFit Newtown:
2 things. #1 The other members are awesome, that’s what makes the workouts “enjoyable.” #2 The coaches. All the coaches have a different style but all do a great job. Coach M. plays the best music though.
What advice I would give to someone just joining CrossFit Newtown:
Learn the movements before you start adding heavier weight. All movements get easier when you are doing them correctly. Ask the coaches, other members, or watch some videos online.
Do you have any diet/nutritional advice?
Count your macros (Carbs, Fat, Protein) You will be surprised how far off you are! I was told 4 years ago to count my macros and never did, never lost a pound. I was the example of how your can’t out-train a bad diet. About 4 months ago I got serious and started counting and lost 15 pounds. It’s not that hard!!!
