February Athlete Spotlight: Brett Enger

Tell us something about your life outside of CrossFit (career, family, hobbies, etc). My wife Olivia and I have been married for 2.5 years.  We have two St. Berdoodles named Scooby and Daphne.  Besides crossfit I love soccer, ice hockey and skiing.  I played soccer in college and really miss the sport.

My favorite book or movie:  I love the movie Shawshank Redemption.  I love WW2 history so any book about the war I find interesting.

My favorite local restaurant:  For a nice beer and burger….the Continental. Wine and dine my wifey…Oishi.

Tell us something that we don’t know or would be surprised to learn about you: I am the youngest of 5 and my next closest in age sibling is 10 years older than me.  I met my wife by asking the entire bar if I could take her out on a date.

How I was introduced to CrossFit:  I was trying to get in shape for our wedding 3 years ago and decided that I could no longer lift weights and use a treadmill.  The boredom was killing me and I needed something fresh and new.

My fitness routine before CrossFit:  Elliptical for 30 mins and bench press for 30.

My thoughts after my first CrossFit workout:  I am fat and completely out of shape. I loved crossfit from day 1.  It did and still does remind me of being on a team.  I love that lockeroom feeling.

My proudest CrossFit accomplishment is:  When I RX’d the first time.  I forget the workout but I remember telling everyone that I knew that I RX’d.  No one had a clue what I meant.

My favorite WOD is:  Murph.  The wod means so much more than finishing.

My Favorite Lift is:  Shoulder press and I love handstand pushups.

My next goal is:  I want to start trying competition weight when doing wods…..who knows if that will happen soon.  A bar muscle up will make me smile too!

How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?  Yes…I am in better shape. I feel better and have a ton of energy.

What I love most about CrossFit Newtown:  The friends that I have met.  I do enjoy my peeps at 6am.  People that work out that early are weird.  I embrace the weird!  Mike K. is such a great coach.  TY Mike.

What advice I would give to someone just joining CrossFit Newtown:  Just try it. Something is different everyday and you get to do it with friends.

Do you have any diet/nutritional advice? No but a nice beer after a hard wod is always very nice.
