Stephanie Wall, January Athlete of the Month
Tell us something about your life outside of CrossFit (career, family, hobbies, etc).
Work as a Community Development Banker for Wells Fargo in the Northeast. Family of 4 boys that are all active which was great so once they could walk, they could also mountain bike and hike! I love do challenging outdoor activities, things you would never think you would ever do (Hut to Hut backpacking trips in the White Mountains or Back Country skiing across a glacier in Norway) all while being completely disconnected – no cell phones!
Favorite movie or book:
Pulp Fiction & the Hunger Games trilogy
Favorite local restaurant
The Porterhouse Restaurant & Brew Pub
Tell us something that we don’t know or would be surprised to learn about you
Completed 7 sprint triathlons, ½ marathon and a marathon all after age 40
How were you introduced to CrossFit:
Greg’s wife Amy was my spinning instructor at the NAC, she started doing a little crossfit when Greg started and “got shoulders” WOW….had to have that!
What was your fitness routine before CrossFit:
spinning, biking, running, P90X, triathlons
What did you think after my first CrossFit workout:
10min AMRAP test workout (10 KB swings, 10 box jumps, 10 air squats) crushed me and made me realize I was not fit! …at least not in the crossfit world
What is your proudest CrossFit accomplishment is:
kipping pullups finally ☺
What is your favorite WOD?
the holiday WODs are the most fun and the hardest, and might include the prowler push just for an extra bonus ☺ generally holiday workouts are in teams and that makes it great fun to work out with friends and new members
What is your favorite lift?
What is your next goal?
consistent good form on snatches – attend Barbell Club
How has CrossFit affected your life outside of the gym?
I definitely feel stronger and with a busy life to manage I think crossfit skills have an impact on almost everything you do – plus a bonus…my teenage sons think their Mom doing crossfit is so awesome!
What I love most about CrossFit Newtown:
I am learning all the time, mastering a few things but the workouts create an environment that requires you to continue to learn technique to build core strength. I have also met some really terrific people, who like me have not perfected this “stuff” by a long shot but we have a great time trying to get there! Thanks to the coaches, specifically Coach Stef who has spent a tremendous amount of personal time encouraging me in my efforts – you are my inspiration and to Brian my “Saturday Coach” – “Of course you can do that, you can do it all day long – now go do it!”
What advice I would give to a someone just joining CrossFit Newtown:
Just do it!! Everyone has a place in the gym – their own level, their own pace, and lots of support to take on new challenges. Start slow, work on form, do it right, share your achievements….and you will surprise yourself ☺
Do you have any diet/nutritional advice?
I love the Paleo diet, just maybe not 100% – crossfit is a strenuous form of exercise and I know that when I workout that way my body craves fuel. Lots of fresh veggies and lean meat seem to do the trick for me.
